The name “SASSOU is a Japanese term that means having a positive state of mind, of looking ahead with optimism to the future. Created by a group of young Mazda designers from five countries under the leadership of Peter Birtwhistle, Chief Designer at Mazda’s European R&D Centre, the Sassou has been presented at 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. The first exterior design sketches were designed by Luca Zollino, the Sassou’s lead designer working with both Peter Birtwhistle and Moray Callum, Executive Officer and General Manager of Mazda Company’s Design Division.

The first step in realising the exterior design was to produce a 2/5 th sized model that was sculptured by the design team in Oberursel by hand using clay.

The model already contained many Zoom-Zoom features that help Sassou immediately recognisable as a Mazda, such as the front end which is an evolution of the Mazda RX-8 with a large, sporty-looking five-point grille and bonnet.
