At the NAIAS 2006 Mercedes-Benz will launching a unique initiative. The manufacturer is unveiling two vehicles that pave the way for an all-new diesel vehicle generation: the E 320 BLUETEC, the Vision GL 320 BLUETEC, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee BLUETEC. Mercedes-Benz has transformed the diesel engine into a clean and future-compatible system. This system is called the BLUETEC.

The first BLUETEC vehicles available in the US will be the E 320 BLUETEC models, expected to launch in autumn 2006.

The GL-Class, a brand new full-size SUV from Mercedes Benz. The company will also presenting the GL 320 BLUETEC. With this latest concept vehicle, the car manufacturer proves that it is possible to combine excellent fuel economy and minimal emissions in every vehicle category, including full-size SUVs. The Vision GL 320 BLUETEC has a V6 diesel engine producing 211 hp. With this performance the expected fuel consumption is 9.4 l/100 km (25 mpg). It is the most economical full-size SUV in the US, offering a fuel saving of between 20 and 40 percent compared to gasoline engines with equal power rating. The E 320 BLUETEC also equipped the same V6 diesel engine, with a fuel consumption of 6,7 l/100 km (35 mpg).

Bluetec is a combination of technologies for passenger cars and light trucks to reduce all relevant emission components. The system for passenger cars includes an oxidizing catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter, as well as innovative systems for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. Whether a combination of Denox and a Bluetec catalytic converter, or AdBlue injection with a Bluetec catalytic converter is used will depend on the individual design concept of the vehicle. Regardless of which technical solution is used, Bluetec makes diesel vehicles in every class the cleanest diesels in the world. Bluetec diesel technology for Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles combines highly efficient engines with an exhaust gas treatment system based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. With SCR technology, nitrogen oxides are converted into harmless nitrogen and water vapor by adding ammonia as a reducing agent in a catalytic converter.( Source from leftlanenews.com)
