According to NST, new automotive policy will be revelead this month. However, the Prime Minister said that it will not have hefty price changes on imported cars.
Below are some points which illustrated how our new automotive will be priced under the ’supposed’ AFTA policy:
From Jan 1, under Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) arrangements, Malaysia will cut import tariffs on cars to 20 per cent from present levels of as much as 190 per cent.

However, Malaysia will likely institute measures to offset revenue loss due to reduced tariffs, such as new taxes and duties.
“Just be patient, you won’t have to wait long,” Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said at the National Economic Outlook 2005 Conference
Among ASEAN country, only Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have implemented the Afta pact.
No wonder our neighbour - Thailand seems to have a much excited automotive industry. More excited by means of having more choices of imported car compare to us. After many years of hearing about AFTA, well, I just hope that what’s saying by our Prime Minister - we won’t have to wait too long is true…
