Yeah… Your just got your new car key. Eagerly to drive away and show it off to everyone. Not only the paint is new, everything includes the “new” smell inside. Now, think twice when you enjoying the new car smell, it is hazardous to your health.
According to study, “new car smell” is caused by volatile organic compounds that could cause headaches, sore throat, nausea and possibly cancer to human body.
The smell usually comes from the plastic, glue and carpeting in the car. When those materials are new, they’re unstable and give off gases, including benzene and formaldehyde, two toxic poisonous gases.
Several Japanese automakers are trying to build their vehicles to match Japanese Health Ministry guidelines for air quality in homes. Not sure about other automakers on their move towards create a “healthier” vehicle.
The health risks will subside in about six months when the smell fades. Meanwhile, a way to reduce inhaling of poisonous gas is to rolling down your windows while driving new car, well, provided you are not driving in a heavy traffic environment, else the smog outside could be even a bigger threat to your health.
